Baptist Medical Center and
Wolfson Children's Hospital

Baptist Medical Center Downtown is a full service tertiary care hospital in Downtown Jacksonville, on the south bank of the St. John’s River and provides a full range of medical services. Within the 583 bed medical center are a number of regional referral centers including The Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute, The Baptist Cancer Institute, The Women’s Pavilion, which includes Neonatology, Perinatology, and all women’s services, and The Heart Hospital which houses services of Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and Cardiac, Vascular, and Thoracic Surgery.

Virtually all specialties of medicine are represented on the medical staff and all services, except Level I Trauma services and some transplantation services, are provided. Ancillary services such as pathology, anesthesiology, and imaging services are particular centers of excellence.

Baptist Medical Center Downtown has been designated as both a Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center and is recognized as the center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery in North Florida. It has also been designated as a Magnet Hospital, the highest honor a healthcare organization can receive for excellence in patient care.

On the same campus as Baptist Medical Center Downtown is Wolfson Children’s Hospital, a large tertiary care children’s hospital offering a complete range of children’s services.

The Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments at Baptist Medical Center Downtown see more than 132,000 patients per year (75,000 adult and 57,000 pediatric) and just completed a renovation and enlargement. The Emergency Center comprises 93 patient beds with separate areas for critical care, emergency women’s services, children’s critical care, and separate pediatric and adult Fast Track areas for lower acuity patients with non-threatening illnesses and injuries.

The pediatric emergency department of Wolfson Children’s Hospital is staffed by physicians trained and certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The Pediatric Fast Track area, called Speedcare, is staffed with primary care physicians with experience in Pediatrics. All physicians on staff in the Emergency Department are board certified.

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit is contiguous to the Emergency Department and operates a large multi-place hyperbaric chamber. Near the Hyperbaric Center is the Wound Care Center, which provides services to both inpatients and outpatients. Physicians in these areas are board certified, and trained in Wound Care and Hyperbaric as well.

The Life Flight Air Ambulance service is located on an elevated landing pad in front of the hospital’s main emergency entrance. The elevated landing pad is directly connected to the Emergency Department.

The Emergency Department operates a short stay observation unit and has within the department its own imaging service including computed tomography (CT Scanner). Immediately contiguous to the Emergency Department are the operating rooms, the endoscopy suite, imaging services and laboratory services.

Connected to the Wolfson Children’s Hospital on the Downtown Campus by an elevated walkway crossing Interstate 95 is the Nemour’s Clinic, a multi-specialty pediatric clinic comprised of almost 200 physicians covering the entire spectrum of pediatrics sub-specialty care.

The Emergency Center at Baptist Medical Center Downtown offers a continuing education program highlighted by an annual Risk Management Meeting, as well as regularly scheduled educational meetings and Journal Clubs. In addition, resident physicians from the University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville and the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville rotate to our department. Educational programs for nurses and paramedics are also offered on a regular basis and medical students from LECOM Osteopathic Medical School began rotating in our department in 2007.
